The tracks Bali-based jazz pianist Erik Sondhy sent to IndoJazzia in March were one of the most engaging sets of solo jazz piano improvisations we’d heard in a long, long time. We were pleased, honoured even, when he asked us to release them online for international distribution.

Fulfilling a childhood dream, and thanks to his love of all things Beatles, last July Erik spent six hours in London’s world famous Abbey Road studios recording enough tracks for four albums; this is why his first solo album is sub-titled Abbey Road Sessions, Volume 1.

Each track has an immediacy and a distinct personality

London Blues
Erik’s strong left hand bounces us straight into a striding loop of minimalist boogie-woogie over which his right hand overlays memories plucked from the ethereal funk land.

I Will has nothing of the jauntiness of the Beatles original as Erik delves deep into its heart and yearns for what might be: Will I wait a lonely lifetime? / If you want me to, I will.

Song For My Mother is melodic classicism and sheer candlelight magic.

Sofia’s Bag is a Broadway song and dance number with words unwritten by Fats Waller’s lyricist partner Andy Razaf.

Hope has a meditative loneliness quality which is very reminiscent of some of Philip Glass’ work.

Echo Beach Calypso
With his left hand providing an underlying metronomic beat, his right dances and together we get carried along to …?

Lyrics Competition
For a limited time, a bonus track, Love Of My Life, will be available for purchasers of the album. We feel that it is such a beautiful tune that it is crying out for lyrics. Who knows, but it might even be a hit, so if you wish to add words to the melody, we’d love to hear from you – in any language.

Email us with the subject line ‘Love’ Lyrics.
